SemiNex unveils hand-held infrared laser device aimed at mass market and consumer applications

Peabody, MA, April 15, 2010 - SemiNex Corporation announces the Laser Engine, an integrated laser diode system designed for manufacturers of high volume medical and other low-cost hand-held applications. Based on SemiNex's patented and proven laser diode manufacturing technology, the Laser Engine includes a high-efficiency laser, heat-spreader, convection cooling device, and optical lensing element. The Laser Engine is available in 1470, 1532, and 1550 nm wavelengths and currently features an excellent power conversion efficiency of 45% watts/amp, offering 3 watts of continuous optical power from 6.5 amps of input current. A version with greater power output is under development.
According to David Bean, President of SemiNex, "The industry is on the cusp of tremendous growth in home laser products, particularly in the consumer medical space. Until now, companies seeking to enter this exciting market needed to engineer their own laser technology and establish their own supply chain. SemiNex solves this by providing the needed engineering, packaging, and manufacturing expertise in the Laser Engine, a single integrated solution."
The Laser Engine is suitable for medical applications such as acne removal, skin wrinkle reduction, and skin ablation and can also be used in a range of professional laser applications like medical procedures and surgery, free-space communications, and range finding. "By shrinking the laser technology to a hand-held device and offering an off-the-shelf yet configurable device, the Laser Engine removes many of the technical challenges for companies looking to enter the consumer laser market place."
The Laser Engine includes a laser, cooling fan, and focusing lens, and comes in two package options. The first package option integrates convection cooling and is 40 mm long with a diameter of 25 mm and a weight of 16 grams, about the size and weight of a golf ball. The second package option is a conductively cooled package measuring just 11 mm by 20mm by 13mm.
In addition to the standard Laser Engine configurations, SemiNex can also provide customers with a complete hand-held laser system built on the Laser Engine that includes an integrated microprocessor control and battery power supply.
About SemiNex
SemiNex Corporation aims to fundamentally transform key industries by displacing conventional laser technology with super-high-power semiconductor diode lasers. SemiNex enables cost-effective laser applications by providing better semiconductor laser performance and efficiency while drastically reducing the laser size and power consumption. This enables lasers to be used more broadly in high-volume applications for medical, military and free space optical communications systems.
